1 In that day you will say, “I will give thanks to you, the LORD; for though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you comfort me.
2 Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the LORD, the LORD, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation.”
3 Therefore with joy you will draw water out of the wells of salvation.
4 In that day you will say, “Give thanks to the LORD! Call on his name! Declare his doings among the peoples! Proclaim that his name is exalted!
5 Sing to the LORD, for he has done excellent things! Let this be known in all the earth!
6 Cry aloud and shout, you inhabitant of Zion, for the Holy One of Israel is great among you!”
Context for study
The image of drawing water follows the confession that God is salvation, strength, and song. The word “therefore” connects the joy of verse 3 with that trust. The remaining verses turn toward thanksgiving, singing, and declaring God’s deeds among the peoples. Read in this short song, the wells of salvation express joyful dependence on God; the image is not an instruction about obtaining physical water.
A question to explore
How does the confession in verse 2 explain the joy in verse 3, and how is that joy expressed in verses 4–6?
